Leidos is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) in meeting regulatory requirements of the Antarctic Treaty and Antarctic Conservation Act. The Environmental Specialist will participate as a team member on projects, plan and support field investigations, conduct data analysis and interpretation, deliver effective environmental trainings, and prepare reports. The Environmental Specialist will work with the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) Environmental Engineering staff and interface with a variety of USAP participants including ASC and National Science Foundation (NSF) personnel, scientists, military personnel, subcontractors, and external agencies.

This position is of limited duration of one season in Antarctica.

Deployment to McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and/or South Pole Station, Antarctica is required of this position for a time period of 4 to 6 months. Eligibility for deployment will require physical and dental evaluations with parameters determined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

​Per contract requirements, US Citizenship is required. Failure to meet these requirements will result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date, this process could take up to 4 months.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision:  Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission:  To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines.  The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Manage and execute tasks related to environmental assessments, monitoring, remediation, and compliance activities to include: reviewing environmental impact assessment documentation, coordinating resources and logistics, and producing deliverables.

  • Deliver effective training and educational program for the community on topics such as environmental protection and stewardship, waste management, and national and international regulations relating to USAP activities in the Antarctic.

  • Perform audits of field camps and scientific and operational projects to ensure environmental requirements are being implemented. Prepare report of audit findings and recommendations for improvements, and communicate these to stakeholders.

  • Maintain and operate environmental monitoring equipment such as photoionization detectors, oil/water interface probes, and meters for assessing soil, water, and air quality parameters. 

  • Maintain and operate GPS units, camera, and other field data collection equipment.

  • Coordinate sampling activities for soil, water, and air collection to include: prepare sampling plans, conduct on-site laboratory analysis of data, and process samples for shipment to analytical laboratories. 

  • Meet with field-going groups to discuss environmental reporting requirements and advise them on proper procedures for recording environmental impact data.

  • Serve as a member of the station spill response team, which typically requires occasional periods of 24/7 on-call availability.

  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment and supplies and prepare re-supply lists.

  • Produce professional documentation, accurately record data, and prepare technical reports. 

  • Responsible for contributing to a positive work environment and safe workplace.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Public Trust Clearance

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and

  • At least four years of responsible experience related to performing environmental assessments, monitoring, and/or remediation activities; ensuring environmental compliance; or delivering environmental education or trainings.

  • Effective verbal and written communication. Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Must be organized, able to multi-task, and able to work without direct supervision. 

  • Experience working with diverse groups of people.

You May Also Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, environmental studies, physical sciences, or related fields.

  • Prior experience conducting fieldwork in remote outdoor environments.

  • Prior experience working in laboratory environments.

  • 40-hr HAZWOPER

Pay Range:Pay Range $57,850.00 - $104,575.00
